Once the basics of weaving have been learned and all preparatory activities have been completed, the course will address topics such as the analysis and sampling of traditional Abruzzo textiles in order to reproduce them, with suggestions for developing personal interpretations of these designs.

Connections with the territory:

During the course, we will explore Abruzzo’s material culture in depth to understand how the technologies adopted have enabled the development of decorative patterns and how these patterns are created in a highly efficient and rational way thanks to these very techniques.

In the past, popular artistic expressions were often considered simple and limited; however, during the course we will discover their endless creative possibilities and learn how to read textiles in order to reproduce, interpret, and personalise them.

Production will use wool, linen, and hemp from local traditions, selecting regional raw materials whenever possible. We will study traditional textiles starting from Calascio examples, analysing their patterns and the materials used; further references will be integrated through photographic archives.

Eva Basile was born in 1962 in Florence, where she primarily lives and works. She graduated in Textile Decoration from the Art Institute of her city, then studied Visual Arts at DAMSLab in Bologna. In 1993, she specialised in Jacquard textile design at the Fondazione Arte della Seta Lisio, where she was invited to join as a collaborator the following year. In 1999 and the following year, she attended two seminars on traditional folk weaving techniques held by Graziella Guidotti in Rocca Varano (MC). A textile expert, since 1994 she has collaborated with the Fondazione Lisio and other public and private institutions. At the same time, she develops Fiber Art works and works on textile culture in a broader sense within Coordinamento Tessitori, a cultural association dedicated to activities related to the textile world.
