Figured fabrics. Recognition, analysis and cataloguing 2 |ONLINE| English

Practical exercises on samples of ancient fabrics and 20th-century reproductions to learn a method of analysis of simple and complex weave structures using such analysis tools as the pick glass, digital microscope and macrophotography. Students are provided with samples and lecture notes.

Figured fabrics. Recognition, analysis and cataloguing 2 - Teacher: Eva Basile

Students learn a method of analysis and annotation of simple to complex weave structures by observing antique and contemporary samples in varying states of conservation. Analysis tools include pick glass, digital microscope, macrophotography. Students are provided with samples and documentation of the techniques studied.

Arguments: 

Looms for weaving figured cloth: draw loom and Jacquard loom. Weft effects: liseré, lancé and brocade. Samites and taquetés, lampases and brocatelles, warp-patterned textiles and figured velvet.

PROGRAM

Analysis of various classes of woven textiles, using historical samples, mechanical reproductions, hand and industrially woven figured textiles.

 2h    Looms for producing figured cloth: draw and Jacquard loom.

         C.I.E.T.A analysis record for weave patterned cloth. (theory)

1h    Draft and point paper. (theory)

1h    Pattern step in warp and weft directions, in relation to loom set-ups and point

         paper drafting. (theory)

3h    Warp count, weft count; explanation of cord and pass; explanation of pass and 

         lac. Calculation of cords, passes and lacs. (1h theory – 2h practice)

9h    Characteristics and technical definition of weft effects: liseré, brocaded and

         lancé. Criteria for recognizing and defining binding points: par decoupure, à 

         liages repris. Berclé effect. (4h theory – 5h practice)

6h    Damasks: loom set-up with lowering and rising shafts in conjunction with

         figuring harness. Classic damask, gros de tours damask, damas de Lyon. 

         Brocaded damask, damask liseré. (3h theory – 3h practice)

6h    Multiple warp techniques: samite and taqueté. Lampas and brocatelle. (3h 

           theory – 3h practice)

3h    Pattern warps: poil trainant, mexicaine, pekin, droguet and grisette. (2h theory

         –  1h practice)

6h    Figured velvet: cut velvet, ciselé velvet, laminated velvet. (3h theory – 3h

         practice)

3h    Review. (2h theory – 1h practice)
