Jacquard Design and Weaving course. Figured fabrics drawn with the weft
Teacher: Eva Basile
This unit introduces the Jacquard design process: structure of the fabric design, pattern drawing, loom technology, design of figured fabrics, decorative ground weft effects and the specifics of the Lisio loom set-ups. Patterning of the fabric surface in this basic course is achieved using self-patterning ground weft techniques.
Each participant verifies the entire process at the Lisio workshop on one of the 5 hand- operated jacquard looms.
PREREQUISITES
Knowledge of basic weaves and graphic software, basic weaving skills, design skills. Students bring artwork ready for the workshop.

PROGRAM
2h (Theory)
Introduction to Jacquard textiles and the technology used to design and produce figured wovens. Discussion of the Lisio looms medium’s technical challenges, as exemplified by samples from the archives of the Lisio school. Introduction to the technology used to design and produce figured wovens at the Lisio Foundation
4h (Theory) Overview of::
• Liseré effects with a single weft and with two alternating wefts
• Binding points: painted on point paper, arranged in a weave structure, provided by the software
• Liseré effects with alternating two wefts and binding points arranged in twills or satins
• Pattern weft effects non-bound on reverse
• Pattern weft effects bound on reverse: binding of supplementary wefts on the back of the cloth, superimposition of weaves.
1h (Theory) Overview of projects and the use of CAD to produce the point papers.
5h (Theory) Damask
• Classical damask based on 5 end satins
• Damas de Lyon
• Gros de Tours damask on a split harness set-up with double cords
• Damask with weft effects
• Gros de Tours damask liseré
• Gros de Tours damask with pattern weft effects
7h (Practice) Overview of projects to be woven on the card piloted hand looms. Use of CAD to produce the point papers. Elaboration of individual projects using design software: selection and adaptation of design, production of pointpaper and reading note, simulation, correction. Transfer of weave information to the loom.
7h (Practice) Punching and lacing of cards using different machines.
42h (Practice) Weaving of projects and variations in colour and weft materials.
