The reading of the Baroque image often requires specific interpretive keys linked to a cultural heritage of theology, rhetorical tools, and iconology that are sometimes not immediately recognized today. Indeed, seventeenth-century art looks to antiquity, to Raphael, and to the great masters of the High Renaissance, but also to literature and the art of eloquence.
In the academies and repertoires of images sought after by artists and collectors, a language was codified that responded to the expressive needs of the times in both secular and sacred spheres.
