Seventeenth-century jewels are small compendiums of Baroque culture. Capable of condensing the major social and religious changes resulting from the succession of the Reformation and Counter-Reformation, these precious items also manifest the characteristically Baroque interest in the astonishing and the exotic. The taste for the marvelous and the devotional spirit of the era intersect and fully reveal themselves in the phenomenon of votive donations to places of worship. Faith and fascination merge into precious ex-votos through successful creative solutions, rich in symbolic meaning.
