Seminar | "Venetian fabrics in the valleys of Bergamo in the Quattrocento and Cinquecento"
"Between the dominions of the Land and the Lagoon. Venetian fabrics in the valleys of Bergamo in the Quattrocento and Cinquecento"
Chair: Alessio Francesco Palmieri-Marinoni
Considering Bergamo as a borderland of the Republic of Venice and as a gate to northern Europe provides us with numerous stimuli for analysis and reflection on the fabrics present in its territory.
While the wealthy merchants of the Val Gandino imported precious velvets and silks to Bergamo’s territory, the Lagoon-area communities originating in the Val Brembana and the Val Seriana conveyed Venice’s textile techniques to their territories of origin, and these were used by many of Bergamo’s painters in their renderings of textile elements in frescoes and on canvas.
The aim of this seminar is to investigate the iconographic and material presence of Venetian fabrics in and around Bergamo in the 15th and 16th centuries, in the main through analysis of frescoes and recently restored canvases.
