In the suggestive setting of the Oratorio of the Zeffirelli Foundation, the open rehearsal of Antigone took place on Sunday 19 June 2022, open to the public.

The performance, prepared and interpreted by the students of the Directing and Acting Course held by Maestro Massimo Luconi, represents the outcome of the Masterclass that took place during the weekend from 3 to 5 June.

The students who collaborated on the staging alongside the director and lecturer of the Zeffirelli Foundation are: Matteo Corati, Yuri Napoli, Alessandro Bianchi, Federico Balestro, Andrea Signorini, Federico Pian, Sara Mazzoni, Cecilia Ferretti, Giulia Tonelli, Costanza Benini, Carmine Bianco, Jessica Guerzoni, Eleonora Pucci.

The costumes were created by the students of the Historical Tailoring and Stage Costume Course of the Fondazione Arte della Seta Lisio Firenze, for which Maestro Luconi was a lecturer during the second trimester of the course "Directing, Stage Design and Costume".

Notes by director Massimo Luconi:

"Revolutionary, saint, terrorist: Antigone, more than any other character of Greek mythology, has been represented and reinterpreted in the most diverse ways. Her strength in opposing the injustices of power has been interpreted as a symbol of resistance and courage throughout the Western tradition; but her total refusal of compromises and her intransigence make her, in other respects, a difficult and obscure character, close to us yet also difficult to decipher.

We have developed a dramaturgical path conceived for a group of young directors, actors and set designers, in a sort of interpretative kaleidoscope, made up of different stagings that come together and unfold through theatrical communication in a ritual that dialogues with Sophocles while also drawing on some of the most significant twentieth-century rewritings, such as Anouilh’s.

We will present the structure, the skeleton of the project, in a process that is still work in progress, but which contains all the tensions and reflections of a working group with diverse talents and strong motivation, which has demonstrated during the preparation process a remarkable ability for project-based reflection."
