The Columbus Prize 2022 for art to Fondazione Lisio
TheFondazione Lisio is among the winners of the XLI edition of the ‘Columbus Prize’ for Art. The award, promoted by the Rotary Club Firenze Est, under the patronage of the Municipality of Florence and the Tuscany Region, honors illustrious personalities in the fields of culture, science, and art. In addition to the Lisio Foundation, the 2022 ‘Columbus Prize’ goes to the Opificio delle Pietre Dure for culture and to Paolo Dario, professor emeritus of the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna, for science. The award ceremony was held on Wednesday, October 12th at 5:30 p.m. at the Palagio di Parte Guelfa.
The year of birth of the “Columbus Prize” is 1948. Since the very beginning, the prize has taken on the dual characteristic, which it still retains today, of celebrating the discovery of America and recognizing the high merits of illustrious personalities who, in every field, have demonstrated the same spirit of “Builders of Civilization” that animated the great Genoese navigator.
The format of the ceremony as well, which takes place annually on October 12th, the anniversary of the discovery of the new continent, is inspired by the first edition: in the Town Hall, in the presence of the Mayor, the Authorities, the Commission, and the public, the reading of the reasons for the awards takes place, and the commemorative oration is delivered on a theme concerning the links between Europe and America, with particular reference to Italy and Florence.
On Wednesday, October 12th, at 5:30 p.m., the award ceremony for the 41st edition of the "Columbus Prize - culture, science, and art" took place in the Palagio di Parte Guelfa. The event was promoted by the Rotary Club Firenze Est, chaired by Enrico Fantini.
The prestigious recognition was awarded this year to Paolo Dario for science, the Opificio delle Pietre Dure for culture, and to the Fondazione Arte della Seta Lisio for art.
During the ceremony, Marco Biffi, full professor of Italian Linguistics at the University of Florence and corresponding academician of the Accademia della Crusca, presented the Lectio Magistralis "Italian words for the discovery of Christopher Columbus".
On behalf of the Lisio Foundation, Elena Baistrocchi, director of the Foundation, and vice president Paola Marabelli accepted the award. Among the reasons for granting the award, excellently presented by Paolo Penko:
The creativity and magnificence of the fabrics – reads among other things in the Columbus motivation – together with historical research, are appreciated by the world of cinema, with American and Italian-American films, such as El Cid by Anthony Mann, where they were used for the costumes of the entire cast.
The costumes of Liz Taylor and Richard Burton in The Taming of the Shrew by Franco Zeffirelli achieved great success. For the absolute excellence demonstrated and confirmed for a century and three generations in its scientific activity and for its constant educational commitment, the Rotary Club Firenze Est is honored to present today to the Fondazione Arte della Seta Lisio the 2022 Columbus Prize for ART.
